"Gumball" was inspired by the actual meeting of my grandparents, Jan and Wimp, or as they were known to us kids in the family, GranJan and Poppa.​

As far as I remember, she was around three and he was about five. Her family had joined his for a Christmas party. Kids will be kids and soon enough, she wound up with her finger stuck in his brand-new gumball machine he had just received as a gift. In order to free her, it had to be destroyed. He hated her, but life will be life and they eventually found their way back to each other, fell in love and started a family. Their love had its ups and downs, like every relationship.​

Contrasting that against the pure, unadulterated innocence of a child and the way they view love inspired the character of Lawrence Ashby whose naive interpretation of his parents' relationship clashes with the harsh reality of their crumbling marriage. This bittersweet yet sincere approach in film is rare and I want the chance to get it right.
